Best Time to Visit Uganda and Rwanda for Safaris and Cultural Experiences

Planning a trip to Uganda and Rwanda! These two East African gems are world famous for gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, and rich cultural experiences. But before you book your flight, it’s important to know the best time to visit Uganda and Rwanda  when the weather is most favorable, wildlife is easiest to spot, and cultural experiences are at their peak.

Uganda and Rwanda Weather Overview

Both countries enjoy a tropical climate thanks to their location near the equator. Temperatures remain warm year round, averaging 20–28°C (68–82°F) in most regions. The main variation comes from rainfall, which affects trekking, wildlife viewing, and travel conditions.

  • Dry Seasons: June–September and December–February

  • Rainy Seasons: March–May and October–November

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking

The highlight of any visit to Uganda and Rwanda is gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Volcanoes National Park.

  • Best Months: June to September and December to February

    • Trails are less muddy and more manageable.

    • Gorillas are easier to spot in the forest.

  • Rainy Season Treks (March–May, October–November): Fewer tourists and discounted permits, but trails are slippery and challenging.

Best Time for Wildlife Safaris

Uganda and Rwanda also offer savannah safaris in parks like Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls, Akagera National Park, and others.

  • Best Months: June–September and December–February

    • Animals gather around waterholes, making them easier to spot.

    • Clear skies and great photography conditions.

  • Rainy Months: Parks remain open, but tall grass can make animals harder to see, and some roads may become muddy.

Best Time for Birdwatching

Uganda is often called the birding capital of Africa, with over 1,000 species, while Rwanda also offers rich birdlife.

  • Best Months: November–April

    • Migratory birds arrive, boosting diversity.

  • Year-Round: Resident species can be spotted any time.

Cultural Festivals and Experiences

Both Uganda and Rwanda have vibrant cultural calendars that enrich any safari.

  • Uganda: Kabaka’s Birthday and Buganda Kingdom celebrations (April–July), Nyege Nyege Festival (September).

  • Rwanda: Kwita Izina (Gorilla Naming Ceremony) in September, Umuganura (Harvest Festival) in August, and various genocide memorial commemorations in April.

Month by Month Guide

  • January–February: Dry, excellent for gorillas and wildlife safaris.

  • March–May: Long rains; challenging trekking but lush landscapes and fewer crowds.

  • June–September: Peak season, best weather, great for gorillas, wildlife, and festivals.

  • October–November: Short rains; green scenery, fewer tourists, discounted permits.

  • December: Short dry season; ideal for gorillas, safaris, and cultural activities.

Final Thoughts

The best time to visit Uganda and Rwanda is during the dry seasons (June–September and December–February), perfect for gorilla trekking, wildlife viewing, and cultural tours. However, rainy seasons bring lush green beauty, fewer tourists, and sometimes better prices and ideal for travelers seeking a quieter experience.

Whichever season you choose, Uganda and Rwanda will reward you with unforgettable memories of gorillas, wildlife, and warm cultural encounters.
