Gorilla Trekking

Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Gorilla Trekking Adventure

First Gorilla Trekking Adventure.

Few wildlife experiences compare to the thrill of standing just meters away from a mountain gorilla. Found only in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, these gentle giants live deep in misty rainforests, making gorilla trekking one of the world’s most sought-after adventures.

If it’s your first time, you may be wondering: How difficult is the trek? What should I pack? When is the best time to go? This guide covers everything you need to know before embarking on your unforgettable gorilla trekking adventure.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking?

  • Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park & Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (home to more than half the world’s mountain gorillas).

  • Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park (easier access, luxury-focused experiences).

  • DR Congo: Virunga National Park (wild and adventurous but less visited).

Most first-time trekkers choose Uganda or Rwanda for safety, accessibility, and well-managed trekking experiences.

How Much Does Gorilla Trekking Cost?

  • Uganda: $800 per permit.

  • Rwanda: $1,500 per permit.

  • DR Congo: Around $400 per permit (but conditions vary).

Permits are limited and must be booked months in advance, especially during peak season.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking

  • Dry Seasons: June–September, December–February → easier trekking and clearer views.

  • Wet Seasons: March–May, October–November → lush forests, fewer tourists, discounted lodges (but muddy trails).

 How Difficult is the Trek?

  • Treks can last 2 to 6 hours, depending on gorilla movement.

  • Terrain can be steep, muddy, and challenging.

  • A moderate fitness level is recommended, but porters are available to assist.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

  • Sturdy hiking boots with good grip.

  • Lightweight waterproof jacket.

  • Long trousers & long-sleeved shirts (to avoid scratches).

  • Gardening gloves (for holding onto branches).

  • Insect repellent & sunscreen.

  • A reusable water bottle & energy snacks.

Rules & Etiquette on the Trek

  • Keep 7 meters distance from gorillas.

  • No flash photography.

  • Don’t eat, drink, or smoke near gorillas.

  • If you feel unwell, don’t trek (gorillas can catch human diseases).

  • Follow ranger instructions at all times.

 Accommodation Options

  • Luxury: Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp (Uganda), Bisate Lodge (Rwanda).

  • Midrange: Buhoma Lodge (Uganda), Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge (Rwanda).

  • Budget: Community guesthouses and eco-lodges.

 Conservation & Community Impact

Gorilla trekking is not just a safari; it’s conservation in action. Every permit sold supports:

  • Gorilla conservation projects.

  • Community healthcare, schools, and infrastructure.

  • Anti-poaching patrols.

By trekking, you directly help protect these endangered primates.

 Final Thoughts

Your first gorilla trekking adventure will stay with you forever — the moment you lock eyes with a silverback or watch a baby gorilla play, you’ll realize why this experience is worth every step. Prepare well, respect the rules, and embrace the magic of the wild.
