Gorilla Trekking Rules

Briefing before Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla Trekking Rules and Etiquette

Gorilla trekking is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Africa. Coming face to face with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is a privilege, but it also comes with important responsibilities. Following the gorilla trekking rules and etiquette helps protect the gorillas, visitors, guides and the surrounding forest.

Gorilla Trekking Rules and Etiquette

Why Gorilla Trekking Rules Matter

Mountain gorillas are wild animals and can be vulnerable to human diseases, stress and changes in their natural behavior. The trekking guidelines are designed to minimize disturbance and ensure that gorilla tourism remains sustainable for generations to come.

Whether you are trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, or Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, respecting the rules is an essential part of responsible gorilla tourism.

Keep a Safe Distance From Gorillas

One of the most important gorilla trekking rules is maintaining the recommended distance from the gorillas. Visitors should never deliberately move closer to a gorilla for a photograph or attempt to touch one.

Gorillas may occasionally approach visitors, but trekkers should remain calm and follow the instructions of the ranger guide. Giving the animals space allows them to behave naturally and reduces unnecessary stress.

Never Touch or Feed the Gorillas

Gorillas should never be touched, fed, or offered food. Even when a gorilla comes close to you, resist the temptation to reach out.

Feeding wildlife can change natural behavior, while physical contact increases the risk of transmitting illnesses between humans and gorillas.

Follow Your Ranger Guide’s Instructions

Your ranger guide is responsible for managing the encounter and keeping both visitors and gorillas safe. Always follow their instructions about where to stand, when to move, and how to behave around the gorilla family.

Do not separate from your trekking group or attempt to approach gorillas independently.

Keep Your Voice Low

Mountain gorillas are sensitive to sudden or excessive noise. Speak quietly during the encounter and avoid shouting, laughing loudly, or making unnecessary sounds.

A calm and quiet approach creates a more respectful wildlife experience and allows you to observe natural gorilla behavior.

Do Not Use Flash Photography

Flash photography can disturb gorillas, so flash should not be used during the encounter. If you are taking photographs, use your camera or phone responsibly and avoid making sudden movements.

Remember that experiencing the gorillas should come before getting the perfect photograph.

Avoid Trekking When You Are Sick

Gorillas can be susceptible to human respiratory illnesses and other infections. If you are feeling unwell, especially if you have symptoms such as a cold, cough, or fever, inform your tour operator or ranger before trekking.

This precaution helps protect these endangered primates from preventable diseases.

Do Not Litter in the Forest

Everything you take into the forest should come back out with you. Do not leave plastic, food wrappers, tissues, bottles, or other waste behind.

Keeping the forest clean protects the gorillas, other wildlife, and the fragile ecosystem they depend on.

Avoid Eating Near the Gorillas

Food should not be consumed during the gorilla viewing experience. Eating can attract wildlife and may encourage unnatural behavior.

Follow the instructions provided by your ranger regarding meals, snacks, and water during the trek.

Be Respectful When a Gorilla Displays Aggressive Behavior

Gorillas may sometimes beat their chests, make vocalizations, move toward visitors, or display other forms of communication. These behaviors are part of their natural social life.

Do not panic, run, scream, or make aggressive gestures. Listen to your ranger and remain calm. The guide understands gorilla behavior and will advise you on the appropriate response.

Respect the Time Limit

Gorilla viewing is limited to a specific period to reduce the impact of tourism on the animals. Your ranger will inform you when it is time to leave the gorilla family.

Even if the encounter is unforgettable, respecting the viewing time is an important part of responsible gorilla trekking.

Respect the Forest and Local Communities

Gorilla trekking is more than wildlife viewing. It supports conservation, guides, rangers, porters, communities, and local tourism businesses.

Respect local customs, follow park regulations, and consider hiring a porter where available. Porters can assist with difficult sections of the trail while benefiting directly from tourism.

What to Remember During a Gorilla Trek

The best gorilla trekking experience is one where visitors observe without interfering. Keep your distance, stay quiet, avoid flash photography, never feed or touch the gorillas, follow your ranger’s instructions, and leave the forest exactly as you found it.

Responsible behavior helps ensure that mountain gorillas remain protected while future travelers have the opportunity to experience these remarkable animals.
